On June 15, 2025, an old iron bridge over the Indrayani River near Kundmala village in Pune’s Maval tehsil, Maharashtra, collapsed around 4 PM, resulting in a tragic incident. Rescue Efforts: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, fire brigade, and local villagers launched a large-scale rescue operation, saving 38 people so far. Fifteen ambulances and boats were deployed to aid the effort, despite challenges from the river’s high water levels due to an orange alert for heavy rain.
Official Response: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced financial aid of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and expressed condolences. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar noted the bridge’s dilapidated state and promised strict action if negligence is found. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while in Cyprus, contacted Fadnavis to monitor the situation.
Cause and Context: Preliminary investigations point to the bridge’s age, rust, and overcrowding as factors, with heavy rainfall increasing the river’s flow. The site, near Talegaon Dabhade, is a popular tourist spot, drawing crowds for its scenic beauty and proximity to a temple, especially on weekends.
